Description:
Dr. Ellen Whitehead will discuss the topic "Are Families a Long-Term Safety Net for Young Adults?" in this installment of Big Questions, Big Ideas. If a young adult continues living in their parentsí home, will they eventually become financially independent? With the rising levels of precarious employment, ballooning amounts of student debt, and shrinking portions of the public safety net, many young Americans are struggling to make ends meet. One strategy for alleviating financial hardship is by relying on family support, such as by living in a family memberís home or receiving cash transfers. While such support can help mediate short-term insecurity, this talk will examine whether receiving help from family members is viable as a long-term pathway to financial independence.
